A planning application for a new facility at Salt Lane Car Park was approved in February 2023 and is due to open at the beginning of 2024.

Why is it being relocated?

The Barracks car park will be demolished as part of City Centre South and will not be replaced. This means that we need to relocate Shopmobility to a new permanent location.

To maintain continuity of service, a comparable amount of blue badge parking space, and closeness to the city centre, we think the most appropriate location is in Salt Lane car park, off Greyfriars Lane.

Salt Lane car park – the new location

This location is close to the shops and means that we can make sure that the new provision is ready before we close the current one, so no gap in service.

It is also within a short distance of the main destinations in the city and close to blue badge parking spaces.

The new Shopmobility

key shopmobility
There will be no change in the way that Shopmobility operates. Opening times will continue to be between 8.45am and 4.30pm Monday to Saturday, and the service will remain free of charge. If you use it, the Ring and Ride service, which will be replaced by WM on Demand, will be able to drop you off and collect you from the new location. The variety and availability of wheelchairs and scooters will be the same, and the current staff will move to the new location.

Access and distance from shops and services

There is step-free, level access between Salt Lane car park and city centre, with dropped kerbs. There is a lift inside Salt Lane car park, and also level access from it to the new Shopmobility unit. There will be a drop off point outside the entrance to anyone that wants or needs to be dropped off.
